Teenage Impresario Stages Benefit Rock Concerts to Help Kids with Cancer
Independence, MO-- Fox 4 News is Working 4 You to spotlight outstanding young people and their accomplishments. In our weekly report called Reaching 4 Excellence, we meet young achievers in subjects like community service and volunteerism, academics, the arts, career exploration, heroism, leadership and overcoming obstacles. This week's report centers on Ashley Serrano, a senior at William Chrisman High School, who produces benefit rock concerts to help kids with cancer.
Kids celebrate their birthdays in all sorts of ways, but usually it ends up being all about themselves. Not Ashley Serrano. Ashley turns 18 next month-- and she's planning a big birthday bash.
"I've coordinated a cancer benefit concert," Ashley says in an excited voice. She's posting fliers now for her rock concert, the third annual "Causefest." Her friend, Dustin Albright, leads one of the bands that will play.
"Seeing how much effort and work she puts in, I was really proud of everything she did," says Dustin, "and I jumped on immediately." Dustin's helped get bands to play free and got the El Torreon Music Hall in midtown Kansas City, Missouri at a reduced cost. But Ashley gets most of it organized herself-- a one-woman dynamo.
"The best thing," Ashley says about Causefest, "is sitting and counting all the money and finding out how much I actually get to donate to the children." Ashley started doing her birthday benefit concerts for kids with cancer back in 2003 when she turned 16. After two concerts she's raised more than 15-hundred dollars and donated it to the cancer unit at Children's Mercy Hospital in midtown Kansas City, Missouri. About a month before this year's Causefest, Ashley and Dustin got a tour of the cancer unit to see how important her concert money donations are.
"It's very cool," says Ashley about the visit. "It makes the whole idea of the benefit more worthwhile for me."
Marjorie Dukart, a development official with the hospital says, "It's a lot of work and for someone so young to do that and pick her birthday to do it on rather than one of those 'give me all the presents' (type of party) it really means a lot." How Ashley finds time to do it is a wonder. At William Chrisman High School in Independence, this senior excels in several advanced placement courses as well as theater and music. She had the lead in the school musical last fall. And she's drawn to journalism where she's portraits editor for the yearbook.
"She just piles it on," says Chrisman journalism advisor Jason Stacy. "It's not ever taking things off. It's always putting something else on the plate." Stacy says Ashley challenges him at every turn, a character trait he relishes. He calls her fearless. Ashley pretty much agrees.
"I think I can tackle anything pretty easily. It just comes naturally for me." On a whim, she even tried out for the American Idol FOX television show in the St. Louis auditions in August, and wrote about it for the Chrisman school paper.
"I did well," Ashley says with a big, self-deprecating laugh. And then in a more somber moment, she reveals, "I sing well." Then back to mock indignation. "I'm just mad they didn't pick me. And I'm banning American Idol from my house." Another big laugh. Not making it to Hollywood for the American Idol finals probably won't be Ashley's only disappointment in life. But it's a good bet there won't be many for this fearless champion of kids with cancer.
Ashley's birthday is February 17th but her third annual Causefest benefit concert is Sunday, February 27th at the El Torreon Club at 31st and Gillham in midtown Kansas City, Missouri. Admission is eight dollars at the door. Ashley will be expecting you.
Watch for "Reaching 4 Excellence" every Wednesday on Fox 4 News at 9 p.m. and every Thursday on Fox 4 News at 5 a.m. and 5 p.m.
